  • Our school will also be having a Scholastic Book Fair the week of October 17-21. A flyer will go home and your child will have an opportunity each day to purchase if they bring $. Remember that there is tax so please send in the appropriate amount to cover the book as well as sales tax. There will be a night for parents to come to the book fair at night on Friday October 21 if you would like to view/purchase books at that time.

  • Friday October 21 is our annual FALL FESTIVAL. A flyer is going home today if you would like to purchase arm bands in advance ($10 for the first band, $ 5 for each additional band). If you would like to purchase them in advance send the $ in an envelope or Ziplock bag to the classroom labeled with the amount of bands that you would like. I will be sure to send it to the office for the PTA to get for you. This armband will allow your child to participate in unlimited activities for the night. You will have the opportunity to purchase bands at the event for the price of $10 each as well as tickets for individual things (4 for $1). Reading Series added to the blog.

On the right hand side of this blog you will notice that I have added our reading series stories. The purpose of this is two-fold. The first reason is so that your child can practice their "Story or Stories of the week". The second reason is for them to be able to go back and read previous texts. I encourage that you only allow your child to read the current or past stories and not to read ahead (this will prevent them from making accurate predictions etc if they have already read it before it's introduced in class).

This week (Oct. 3-7) we are working on 2 stories that are found in theme 2 (Val Can Help & The Bunnies and the Fox). The first story is our Get Set Story and will have a review of the "Words to Know". The second story is the story that they will be tested on for comprehension on every Friday. The stories will continue on like this for a few weeks. The comprehension skill for this week is "Fantasy and Realism" please be sure to point that out in their reading and other stories they are reading at home.

For the week of Oct 10-14 the stories will be in Theme 2: Quit It, Bug! & A Surprise for Zig Bug. You would want to start having the students read these stories after Monday October 10th once they have been introduced in class. Story Structure is the comprehension skill being taught this week: Story Structure-The way in which characters, events, reactions, goals, attempts, and outcomes are organized together to create a cohesive plot. In first grade words it has to do with story characters, setting, problems and solutions. (Looking for noticings about the story). For example a question you could ask is "Where are the characters?"
