We also started working on Report Writing on Monday.  This is a lengthy process that will take up at least the next 2 months.  This week we are creating a notebook for reference during the report process called a Non-fiction Conventions Notebook.  Inside the students will find explanations as well as examples for the following:
  • Labels
  • Photographs
  • Captions
  • Comparisons
  • Cutaways
  • Maps
  • Types of Print
  • Close-Ups
  • Table of Contents
  • Index
  • Glossary
The class will all create a report first on the same topic which I have chosen Penguins
(I will be walking them thru this step by step).  After we complete the class reports (which will be another reference for them when they are writing their own report) students will be given an animal which I have checked out the book to aide them and have to write the report completely independently using all the above resources given to them.
Their report will consist of the following (all completed independently you will be completely impressed how well they complete this when give the challenge).
  • Illustrated cover with illustrations labeled with the animal as well as the author (themselves)
  • Table of Contents with appropriate page numbers
  • 6 pages of information
    • What it looks like?
    • What it eats?
    • Where it lives?
    • How it moves?
    • What it Can Do?
    • Interesting Facts.
      • (Each of the above pages needs at least 4 facts per page on the page topic)
  • Diagram of animal labeled
  • 2 pages of independently take notes on the above pages.
