On the right hand side of this blog you will notice that I have added our reading series stories. The purpose of this is two-fold. The first reason is so that your child can practice their "Story or Stories of the week". The second reason is for them to be able to go back and read previous texts. I encourage that you only allow your child to read the current or past stories and not to read ahead (this will prevent them from making accurate predictions etc if they have already read it before it's introduced in class).
This week (Oct. 3-7) we are working on 2 stories that are found in theme 2 (Val Can Help & The Bunnies and the Fox). The first story is our Get Set Story and will have a review of the "Words to Know". The second story is the story that they will be tested on for comprehension on every Friday. The stories will continue on like this for a few weeks. The comprehension skill for this week is "Fantasy and Realism" please be sure to point that out in their reading and other stories they are reading at home.
For the week of Oct 10-14 the stories will be in Theme 2: Quit It, Bug! & A Surprise for Zig Bug. You would want to start having the students read these stories after Monday October 10th once they have been introduced in class. Story Structure is the comprehension skill being taught this week: Story Structure-The way in which characters, events, reactions, goals, attempts, and outcomes are organized together to create a cohesive plot. In first grade words it has to do with story characters, setting, problems and solutions. (Looking for noticings about the story). For example a question you could ask is "Where are the characters?"
